I’ve always been a reader. High school and college put a damper on reading (forced reading drove me nuts) but since graduating, I’ve rekindled my love affair with the book. Don’t let my use of the word “rekindled” fool you. I’m a book person. I like the spine cracking when you open it (I will put books back at the bookstore if they have been skimmed too much) and I like to tote around a book. It’s comforting. I’ll admit to using the Kindle on my iPad once in a while. But it’s not the same. I’m blessed to have a room full of books in my house and I agree with what Henry Ward Beecher said: “A little library, growing larger every year, is an honourable part of a man’s history. It is a man’s duty to have books. A library is not a luxury, but one of the necessaries of life.”
I started this blog in 2010 for two reasons primarily. I find that I enjoy books I’ve read more if I stop to talk about them or write about them. I’m in a wonderful book club, but we only meet six times a year. So this blog is an extension of a book club–it allows me to think more about what I’m reading and try to have a conversation with other readers. And for someone as forgetful as me, it allows me to remember what I have read.
Secondly, it’s way to keep a journal. I’m not as positive about this part as I am the first reason. Let’s just say I write about books and occasionally throw in some personal reflection.
If you are looking for something to read, check out the full archive page. All the books I’ve blogged about are listed there. If you click a book link in an entry, it will take you to an Amazon page. If you buy, I theoretically get some credit from Amazon. I think I’d rather you go to your local independent bookstore. Several of my favorites are listed at the bottom of the blog.
Feel free to share this with your friends and colleagues. We don’t read enough, anymore, do we? I love sharing recommendations and hearing about what others are reading. Speaking of that, I welcome comments on the entries, suggestions, and requests. You can follow the blog on Twitter @somuchtoread or sign up to get new posts in your inbox.
Bottom line, as always, thanks for reading.
